The Brazilian cinema is a lot better than what it used to be, producing films that make us laugh, cry and in many cases, make us think.
The quality of production increased a lot in the past decade with the release of films recognized nationally and internationally. The market share of the Brazilian movies in Brazil reached 16% in 2010. Chico Xavier, The Astral City and Elite Squad 2 were the big names last year, taking 3, 4 and 6.2 million people to the cinema respectively. To simplify the comparison, the leader movie in the same year was Avatar with 9,1 millions viewers.
When I saw that one of Sydney’s main newspapers had published a full page article about the Brazilian chef, Alex Atala, my first reaction was to show it to everyone around me (yes, it is funny how we became more patriotic outside of Brazil). Now that I have a blog, I want to show it to more people.
I admire the Brazilians who have reached standout positions in the international market and Alex Atala is one of them. He is one of the highlights of the World Chef Showcase, part of the Crave Sydney International Food Festival this weekend. His restaurant in Sao Paulo, D.O.M, was ranked 7th in the San Pellegrino list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants of 2011.
